The Medicine Festival Cacao

Organic Mexican Lavado Cacao | Soconusco, Chiapas, Mexico

The cacao selected to be served in the cafés at Medicine Festival 2026.

We're incredibly proud to introduce the return of our Organic Mexican Lavado Cacao.

After selling out during its first release, it's back in a new granulated format, making it easier than ever to prepare while preserving the same exceptional flavour, purity and nutritional profile.

This is more than another ceremonial cacao.

As far as we're aware, Nature's Joint is the first company to introduce authentic Organic Mexican Lavado ceremonial cacao in this format to the UK, giving people the opportunity to experience one of Mexico's most traditional and unique cacao styles.

Its selection to be served at Medicine Festival 2026 reflects the transparency, quality and dedication behind every stage of its journey—from the people producing it in Soconusco to the cup in your hands.

One of the Birthplaces of Cacao Culture

Our cacao comes from Soconusco, Chiapas, one of the earliest documented centres of cacao culture in the world.

More than 3,500 years ago, the ancient Mokaya civilisation became one of the first known cultures to prepare and consume cacao. Their knowledge would later influence the Maya before cacao became one of the most highly prized foods of the Aztec Empire.

Soconusco cacao was considered so valuable that it was transported hundreds of miles as tribute and reserved for nobility, priests and rulers.

Today, this extraordinary region continues to preserve traditions that have been passed down through generations, producing one of the world's most unique styles of cacao.

Every cup connects you to one of the oldest living cacao traditions on Earth.

The Rare Lavado Process

Unlike almost every ceremonial cacao available today, Lavado cacao is never traditionally fermented.

Immediately after harvest, the fresh cacao beans are carefully washed in flowing river water before being naturally sun-dried.

This rare ancestral method creates an entirely different cacao experience.

The result is a remarkably clean flavour profile with rich chocolate notes, gentle natural bitterness and an exceptional concentration of naturally occurring cacao compounds.

Only a handful of producers continue preserving this traditional method today, making authentic Mexican Lavado cacao incredibly rare.

New Granulated Format

Our latest production has been carefully granulated, making it easier than ever to prepare.

The same exceptional cacao.

The same remarkable nutritional profile.

Now easier to weigh, melt and mix.

Perfect for daily use, ceremonies or sharing with family and friends.

Why These Naturally Occurring Compounds Matter

Polyphenols

Polyphenols are naturally occurring plant compounds recognised for their antioxidant properties. Cacao is one of the richest natural food sources of polyphenols.

Flavanols

Cacao flavanols have been extensively researched for supporting healthy circulation, endothelial function and cardiovascular health.

Epicatechin

Epicatechin is one of cacao's most researched naturally occurring flavanols and has been studied for its potential role in supporting blood flow, vascular function and exercise recovery.

Antioxidants

Cacao naturally contains exceptionally high levels of antioxidants, helping protect cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

Theobromine

Theobromine is cacao's primary naturally occurring stimulant. Many people find it provides a smoother, longer-lasting lift than coffee, without the sharp spike often associated with caffeine.
